The story says "when Arthur laid his hand upon the sword, it slid from the stone as a sunbeam across a wall" but what it doesn't say is how it got there with it's magic. Some say Merlin put it there, but who cared for it and saw that it would not lose it's magic? The elves and the fairies would be the most likely guardians.
